The History of ACEs and the Healing Power of CHW/Ps

Presenters:

Allison Guevara - Social Impact Consultant, Allison Guevara Social Impact Consulting

Rosio Sanchez - Lead Community Organizer, Cradle to Career Santa Cruz County / Santa Cruz Community Health

Diana Valadez - Promotora, Cradle to Career Santa Cruz County

Dr. Lisa Gutierrez Wang - Director of the Santa Cruz County Children’s Behavioral Health Department who also worked closely with former CA Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Harris Burke during the early development of the ACEs Aware Initiative

This session was the in-person kickoff of the ACEs Community Support Team with a focus on building relationships with other CHW/Ps. It also builds on the Community Resilience: Pair of ACEs and Trauma-Informed sessions by deepening learning around the history of the ACEs Aware Initiative, why ACEs screenings are important, and what is it like to get screened for ACEs, as well as how CHW/Ps are drawing on their own experiences as patients and community members to support clinics and patients. Finally, it supports the building of self-care practices and healthy boundaries (to help CHW/Ps prevent and mediate secondary trauma or retraumatization).
